Kid's Kampong Fishing

With only a few days before Gpa had to go home, and a full house of kids, we were desperate to get out one afternoon. After a little search through our guide book on what to do with kids in Singapore, we read up on Kid's Kampong Fishing and decided to try it out.

Waaaay back in the 60's, Singapore was just an emerging country, new to independence. The people lived in kampongs (a malay word for village). When it would rain, the kids would run outside with jars to scoop up little fish that would swim in from the overflowing drains. Thus, in this salute to tradition, the Kid's Kampong fishing in Pasir Ris was born. A little place out on the east part of the island, Kid Kampong is an enclosed fishing area.

With the entrance fee, each kid received a bucket and net for scooping up fish. Plus water and ice cream!

They also gave us some food pellets for the koi pond. There were so many fish!
Gpa and Kai were best buds. Kai caught a few on his own (I think they were all dead) and Gpa caught the rest.
Cache managed to catch a ton of fish but while he was flipping them out of the stream they would flop onto the ground and then Cache would scrape them along the cement trying to get hold of them. So needless to say over half of his fish were floating upside down in his bucket. Ronin caught a lot too and wanted to take some home, but when he realized we didn't have any food for it or a place for the fish to live (let alone counter space for a fish bowl!) he poured them back in the stream.
These koi fish would suck on your hand if you got close to them. They were always ready for a bite to eat, and if your hand was there, then they assumed you were feeding them. Kai didn't put his hand in, but Gpa and Cache did. They said it was really gross. Something I knew without having to try it myself. Ick!
Kai thought it was a little weird too. They also had turtles, rabbits, and ducks to feed too. Overall a very successful day out with 3 kids. Much better than being trapped in an apartment!
