Summer Break Recap: Sentosa Island

Just a little way out from Singapore is a small island called Sentosa. Basically its a miniature Orlando Florida with rides, Universal Studios, hotels, shops and the like. As long as you keep your activities basic you can come away with having had a great day without breaking your bank.

They have this fun luge and sky ride that we all did a few times. The worst part of it was (besides being afraid of falling!) was the sweaty helmets we had to wear. So gross.

The kids got a chance to play in the surf. It was the first realization that the ocean is salty! Yuck!

Once they got used to that, it was a fun time. Ronin inched out into the water a little bit at a time. He was leery of the waves and the salt, but by the end he kept screaming, "This is so fun! I can't believe I'm doing this!"
The ocean exceeded all their expectations.

Patrick and I sat in the sand and watched the kids play. The beach by our house isn't that clean and its been since San Diego that we have had a proper beach to enjoy. So it was fun. Naturally, Singapore doesn't even have sand. They bring it all in from other places. I think Indonesia at first, but now Cambodia. All the process of land reclamation. I'm not sure where Sentosa's sand comes from, but its nice nonetheless.
They LOVE these cut out billboard photo ops here in Singapore and you will see the kids love to take advantage of them. We had an angry bird on our hands:
We had a chance to bring a new friend with us. It made playing all that more fun. I think by the end of the day he was really ready to be away from the Larsen clan, but for awhile they had a smashing good time. We ended the day with ridiculously expensive burgers from Carl's Jr. The only cheap thing here to eat is hawker food and you can only eat so much of it. Sometimes you just want a burger!
Singapore actually means "Lion City" in Malay. The country's mascot is the MerLion. The bottom half is a fish symbolizing the fishing village it was originally, and the top half is a lion for its original name. The original Merlion you see in pictures is actually in the bay and spouts water. This is just a replica that you can climb up into.
This is the Merlion walk. It is a fun little climbing adventure made of mosaics. It really is lovely to look at and of course spouts water in various locations. All in all our trip to Sentosa was a success. There are other places we didn't explore and we look forward to doing that when visitors come. Until then I think we will stay a little closer to our own neck of the woods and keep our Sing dollars in our pockets.
